Maple Scones

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tbsp brown sugar, packed
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 stick butter, cold
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 egg
2 tbsp milk, or as needed

Preheat oven to 400F. Combine flours, brown sugar,  baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the flour with a fork until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the walnuts, then stir in the maple syrup, egg, and enough milk until the dough starts to form a ball. Lightly flour a work surface and roll dough on flour to coat. Knead lightly and if the dough is too soft, add more flour on the outside.

Transfer to a greased baking sheet and roll out or pat into an 8 inch disk. Cut into wedges but do not separate.

Bake until golden brown, which takes about 20 minutes. Remove from baking sheet when done and separate. Serve warm.
